Indian Students Weigh Canada, Ireland for Higher Education

April 13, 2017

With a student loan Rs2.7 million study loan secured already and an assurance of admission to the technological university in Michigan, Rahul Kolli was ready to enter the United States for his master’s degree program.

Then the current president of the united states was elected into power, and he assured the people of the state that he would make the acquisition of a work permit difficult as they take away employment opportunities for American citizens. Rahul has decided to go the Ireland instead, where the entire cost of the study would be much lower than what he intended to spend in the United States.

He also thinks he would settle in the country once he’s done with his studies in Ireland.

The story is the same for a variety of Indian nationals in the country. The current witch-hunt of individuals from India in the United States has made some people extra careful about the plans they make about their studies.

They are beginning to expand their horizon and search for better options asides the United States. Countries like Canada, New Zealand, and a lot of others have come to mind for some. This has obviously reduced the number of requests submitted by Indians to American universities as they are starting to rethink their so-called first choice university.

The reason why Indians have been so keen in the past years to come into the country is driven by the successes of foreigners in places of influence, like the CEO of Google and the co-founder of Suns Microsystems.

All that is by the way though.

The concern now is the safety of the individuals as the current administration has made moves to alter the H-1B permit scheme which is responsible for the migration of Indian nationals.

“The current rate at which Indians are becoming victims of hate crimes is alarming,” an Indian based in the United States who is a beneficiary of a student grant stated. “Should I stay back in the United States to work, I can always pay back the grant in three years’ time. But if I go back to the country of India, I might spend the next seven years of my life trying to pay the debt.” International students in the United States can spend a year doing practically.

It might take more than a year for those in fields of science, math, technology or engineering. More than half of applicants from India chase degrees in these areas.
