EU citizen ID scheme proposed after Brexit
A think tank - Policy Exchange - has made the suggestion that Britain needs to have a CITIZEN ID registration scheme. Moreover this will lead to strengthening border controls after Brexit. It also mentions that the proposed scheme, for registering all EU citizens, who stay back in the UK, after the end of the transition period, on December 31, 2020. This method should be used for the country.
It will justify entitlements of people to be in the Kingdom and also access jobs and services. Additionally, it will make it hard for the illegal immigrants in carrying their activities.
It should manage the interactions of citizens with the state, through a digital system that is based on a reference number that is unique as well as personal . There must be some safeguards built in the central storage of data. The aim must be protecting them against any misuse.
The authors of the report say that the concept of a registration scheme needs a second look. Brexit, combined with the end of free movement from the European Union are factors to rethink, and improve immigration controls. There is a plan for 3.6 million European Union citizens in the UK, to join a registration scheme.
People will get a unique European Union Citizen Number, that is based on the document and also has bio metric and photographic data. It will secure the rights and they can access the public services. There will also be digital security in the system for protecting the data.
A smooth and digital border system, will help the UK to become an innovative country like the US, Australia and Singapore.
The scheme would work online and through the Smartphone app. Moreover, registration expenses will be about £75. The EU identity scheme needs to be an initial trial for another scheme that can later accommodate UK citizens also.
Initially it can start with the citizens voluntarily, and more people can be persuaded to get an enrollment. It will also remove the need for a hostile environment policy.
Today there is a need to reopen the debate about ID management and also reassure the people regarding the people in the country, their tenure of stay, and their entitlements.
The report makes a plea for a decisive process in removing illegal immigrants and failed asylum seekers.
The authors have also made a recommendation regarding more investment in border control.\
There is also a great requirement of a single authority to be in charge of coastline border security. Additionally, Britain must also coordinate with Irish authorities to stop illegal entries.
When people believe that the national borders are managed well they will have no worries regarding people crossing them.
