Nigeria to waive-off visa requirement for Africans

August 13, 2016

Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, indicated that the nationals of the African continent will no longer need a visa to enter Nigeria,2017 onwards.

Nigeria plans to waive-off visa requirement for Africans

The Minister announced during the meeting at Town Hall in Abuja, while discussing the foreign policy. He further mentioned that the visa-free travel is a part of the African Union’s decision to introduce a single passport for the entire continent. This initiative enables all the African nationals to move freely within the continent.

According to Onyeama, this policy will expand the economic prospects of Nigerians within the continent. Currently, only 10 percent of the trading is done among African nations as many businesses prefer trading outside the continent.

He said that "We are firmly in support of the African single passport and the proposed Free Trade Area in the continent from next year, which will enable Nigerian manufacturers and entrepreneur to have a larger market for their produce. Nigeria wants to extend the free movement of people across the continent beyond the ECOWAS as an unrestricted movement of people will promote trade."

Nigeria Government aims to attract foreign direct investments and promoting export market access for its businesses.
