A Travellers Guide to Turkey

Turkey is a secular country that stands between the East and the West straddling the Bosphorus between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and the capital city Istanbul was once known as Constantinople and Byzantium and was the seat of Christianity in the East in the ancient world.  The country has warm weather for most of the year and lots of beautiful sandy beach resorts, outstanding ancient monuments such as the Hagia Sophia museum, which was built in the 6th Century first as a church then used as a mosque and stone henges which predate Stonehenge in the UK by tens of thousands of years. Turkey was colonised over the millennia by Hittites, Greeks, and Romans, so is a fantastic country to visit if you love archaeology and ancient history. If you are travelling there from India you need a passport that has been valid for 6 months prior to your visit and a visa, which you can get from the Turkish Embassy. You also need a covering letter from your employer stating that you are on vacation and three months of bank statements as well as a return ticket and enough funds to cover your holiday as well as a hotel reservation.

Visit Turkey

Turkey is well known for its wonderful street markets and highly skilled leather workers, so be prepared to stock up on stylish leather jackets and hand- tooled bags. The food too tends to be delicious since the days of the Ottoman Empire when there were more than 1,400 cooks in court and the cuisine incorporates foods from both Asia and Europe with fresh fish and dolmades a speciality as well as the ubiquitous kebab that you will find on every street corner. Turkey is a fairly cheap country to visit with competitively priced beach resorts and cheap restaurants as well as naturally friendly locals.
