UK Visa Restrictions may hit 30,000 Indian Technical Graduates

April 08, 2017

At least 30,000 Indian experts in the field of information technology would be affected by the United Kingdom’s move to put a restriction on work permits which also entails stopping the temporary permit scheme.

This comes after they had lost their tendencies to work and be employed in the United Kingdom. Young software engineers were sent on missions and short projects by the information technology firms they work for using the temporary permit.

From Thursday, these temporary permits, also known as Tier 2 permits for temporary employees, would no longer be issued to professionals.

There are around 30,000 Indian professionals currently employed in the United Kingdom under the temporary permit scheme; a report made public by Nasscom stated.

There would be no renewals for the permit category immediately they expire.

Another employment permit would remain available for application as the minimum wage in the country has been bumped up 69% to around £41,500. This would have a detrimental effect on the prospects of young and upcoming engineers as firms cannot afford this huge increase in wages, especially at a period when employment opportunities are on the decline for many information technology companies.

Talented workers freedom should be unlinked from migration because it is entirely different from low-skilled employment.

At Nasscom, there has been a vivid movement from out end to make this case clear to both the government of the United Kingdom and also India. In spite of all that, the government of the United Kingdom has decided to go ahead with its scheme,” a report made public stated earlier this week.

“Our firms are putting in billions of pounds to make sure local workers are employed and have been employing them greatly as well.”

Information technology firms had been waiting for the move from the government as it was brought to the house of senate last year. The prime minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, was in the country of India the following week after the issue was passed but both nations were unable to come to an agreement.

The move, as earlier mentioned, would significantly impact the chances of younger workers, with nearly seven years experience under their belt, getting a transfer to the United Kingdom as the wage packet is steadily rising.

“The younger IT experts would feel the effect of this move the most because on one hand, you have job cuts due to automation, and on the other hand the chances of going abroad to more popular sites in Singapore, the United Kingdom or the United States fall greatly.”
