Vatican City-Visit The World’s Smallest Country

Vatican City is the smallest state globally and is actually a walled city within Rome and can be visited by Indian tourists with a three-month Schengen visa. It is spread over 110 acres and has a population of 842 citizens. The language spoken there is Italian and the religion is Roman Catholicism, which is appropriate seeing as it is the home of the pope. The currency is the euro and drivers have to drive on the right-hand side of the road. Inside Vatican City are many world famous cultural and religious sites such as the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican museums, which host some of the most famed sculptures and paintings by the likes of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. The economy of Vatican State is generated by the sale of tourist mementos, special stamps, publications and the fees for admission to the museums as well as cafes and restaurants. Founded in the 16th century, the Vatican Museums exhibit everything from Etruscan bronzes, old masters to Egyptian mummies, and some of the highlights are the classical statuary in the Museo Pio-Clementino, rooms frescoed by Raphael, and of course the Michelangelo-painted Sistine Chapel.

The museums are housed within the Palazzo Apostolico Vaticano, which is composed of two palaces, the Belvedere Palace and Vatican Palace, which are attached by two galleries.

It is advisable to buy a guide to the museums, as exhibits are not always clearly labelled for tourists. Pinacoteca papal picture gallery has worked from Fra Angelico, Raphael, Titian, Giotto, Caravaggio and Leonardo Da Vinci amongst other world famous artists. There is even the Museo Gregoriano Egizio (Egyptian Museum) which hosts Egyptian pieces from the Roman period. Even if you are not Roman Catholic, Vatican City provides a culturally fascinating destination for any Indian tourist.
