Switzerland - More than just tax havens and clocks

June 23, 2016

Switzerland which comes between the Germanic parts of Europe and France and Italy is part of the Schengen Area even though it is not part of the EU and as such, an Indian citizen holidaying in Switzerland needs nothing but a Schengen 90 visa, a valid passport and enough funds to cover your Swiss holiday. The small land country is a landlocked country, which is separated geographically by the Jura, the Alps, and the Swiss Plateau, with the majority of the 8 million citizens living on the Plateau, where Geneva and Zurich reside.

Switzerland- More than just tax havens and clocks

There are four languages spoken there, which shows this blend of cultures, German, Italian, French and Romansh. The currency used is the Swiss Franc and the capital city is Bern, but the biggest city is Zurich, famed for its banks. Perhaps due to a cultural mix that really works, the Swiss tend towards neutrality in times of war, and have not fought in a war since the 1800’s, yet form large parts of peacekeeping forces, formed The Red Cross and act as the personal guard for the Pope. It is one of the richest countries globally, with a high standard of living and quality of life.

Visit Switzerland

As well as some stunning mountain ranges and pretty Alpine meadows, which are favoured by skiers and hikers, Switzerland has some beautiful cities, Geneva by Lake Geneva, the biggest Alpine lake is sophisticated and multi-cultural, with the headquarters of many large companies based here and is a treasure trove of luxury shops. But if you want to see a little of the real Geneva, wander along the Rhône's industrial shores and you will find some lively local bars. Zurich is now seen as one of the world's coolest cities to visit, with a fabulous summer parade, beautiful river, and lakeside setting but with an old centre with narrow lanes and towering church steeples, yet the art scene and nightlife are known to be innovative and welcoming. The countryside around has many pretty hikes and small towns to visit, so a holiday to Switzerland from India can combine the best of city and country life.
